We are whirling through January as our winter fun continues. This week we continued to focus on all things winter. We finished our The Snowy Day project, which will stay in our classroom for a little, but everyone had a chance to paint a large cut out of Peter to bring home.

On Tuesday we read Sneezy The Snowman, which is all about a snowman that sneezes because he is cold. The children, in the story, try to solve Sneezy's problem by offering him hats and scarves. Sneezy has his own ideas though; like drinking hot chocolate and taking a dip in a hot tub. Can you believe it, he melted? This got funnier and funnier as Sneezy kept melting, with every time, the children had to build him anew. FInally, the children solve the problem by dressing him up in their winter clothes and giving him an ice cream cone. No more hot chocolate for Sneezy!

We also read It Looks Like Spilt Milk. I asked the class if they had ever spilled things before? I had a lot of interesting responses, but did eventually get to talk about how making mistakes are opportunities to create. We looked at all the pictures together, noticing that the milk looked like a tree or a pig.

We also added to our song repertoire and learned The Hokey Pokey, this was after several rounds of Head, Shoulders, Knees, And, Toes. We even had the opportunity to have Mrs. Dotivala sing Baby Shark!  Movement and song have become a highlight for green class and we use them to prepare our minds and bodies to quietly listen.

In music this week, Ms. Wada taught us a dance routine to Johann Strauss’s The Blue Danube. Ms. Wada and I demonstrated the steps first, and then, the children performed with a partner. The kids  skipped down the line in unison, stopped to grab a blue scarf, waved it at their friend, and then continued to skip to the end where they jumped to hit a tambourine. This was a really good way to flex our minds and bodies by using play. We also practiced the song Little Snowflake, using a blue scarf to twirl and catch our ‘snowflakes.’ Sometimes snowflakes would land on our toes or our head.
