Corduroy and Rainbows

What do Corduroy and rainbows have in common? They both bring on smiles. This week the children enjoyed meeting Corduroy. On Monday, the children sewed a pocket like the one that Corduroy receives and gave him pockets and buttons on Wednesday. And you guessed correctly if you said our Circle Time visitor this week was non other than Corduroy.

Do you know the Corduroy stories? In the first Corduroy book, he gets into some mischief while searching for a button. In the second book, he gets into mischief again as he searches for a pocket. The children enjoyed making a pocket with their name in it just like the one Corduroy gets, and loved covering him with buttons and pockets on another day. Some of the play choices this week were:

The children made beautiful painted rainbows by looking at a sample and working individually with a teacher. Without any distractions, it was amazing to see how they were able to produce their own with only verbal directions along with the sample.

Has your child told you about the “Waiting Chair”? The wood chair in this photo is used for children to sit in who are next in line for the bathroom. Sometimes rather than telling a child during the first hour of school that it is his/her turn in the bathroom, we simply say “Your turn on the Waiting Chair.” However, prior to going to the playground, everyone needs to take a turn in a short period of time. To expedite things, the teachers would set up a number of Waiting Chairs. Now, when we reach this point in the day, the children go right to the tables, remove the chairs and make a line up of “Waiting Chairs.”

My glasses have progressive lenses. Sometimes it is difficult for me to read a book to the children while wearing them because I’d have to have my head at an uncomfortable tilt to see the words clearly as I’m holding up the book. Your children keep track of everything I say and every action I take. One day this week, I didn’t take my glasses off while reading the title and opening to the first page. But when I heard “Mrs. Levine, take off your glasses” I was sure to do as told!
