Having Fun Inside And Out

We spent one week in our classroom discussing penguins. They were everywhere! There were penguins on the rug, in the water table with snow, on the tables and in our artwork. There were also many penguin books in our book bucket and a wide assortment of them read in our circle. Ask your child if penguins talk on cell phones? What does the baby chick do to find his parents?

Penguins are always a favorite of children at this age. We looked at pictures of different types of penguins on our flip chart. We discussed who our favorite penguin was? The Macaroni penguin with his yellow hair is always a favorite of many children. He is very cool looking!

We also discussed how the father penguin keeps the egg under a flap of skin on his feet for a very long time. We practiced doing this with our own eggs and realized that it was not easy.

In addition, we colored penguins with black, orange and white wax crayons. We then used a water bottle to spray them with. We wanted to answer the question, “do penguins get wet? “. We concluded that they do not get wet because of the wax that they have on their feathers! Ask your child that question and see if they remember the answer.

The building that goes on each week in the classroom has become more detailed and more cooperative. There is also some executive functioning happening! The children will often plan out their structures together before they actually start building them. We, of course, love seeing this progress happen!

This past week we took advantage of the snow. We were the first class outside on the day that it was snowing. We were able to make the first footprints on the playground. That was very exciting! These pictures do not need words…

Some Big Room time…

Lastly, this past week we celebrated Evie’s birthday. She turned 5. I think that she enjoyed every bit of her special day at school!

Thank you for sending in all of your child’s snow clothes especially the waterproof mittens/gloves. We are really impressed at how adept your children are at both putting on their clothes and taking them off. We are there to help but many of them can do it independently! Please send them in every day in their green snow bags.

We have been working hard to get ready for the Art Show. It is this coming Saturday on 1/27 from 9:00-11:00 A.M.. Hope to see you there!

Stay warm..
