Pumpkins Everywhere, Week 7

This week was a challenge for big and small people alike without being able to head outside with all the rain!  Exercise is essential for kids, it helps them moderate their bodies. Sometimes you need to go fast to slow down. We weaved some movement into the second half of our day and did some freeze dancing. After dancing, it was time for a monster hunt! It was very similar to our bear hunt and the kids could follow along, acting out the different obstacles and running away from the monster at the end.

We did a lot of sensory work this week. The kids had a lot of fun trying to melt a giant ice pumpkin using mini spray bottles. The spray bottles are a great way to strengthen their hand muscles.

We also did some pumpkin explorations. The kids hammered golf tees into a giant pumpkin.  They also got to feel and see the insides of two different size pumpkins using ziplocs and a light table. They were able to compare the sizes of the seeds and color from a mini pumpkin, and a white and orange pumpkin.

We also gardened! As a group, they each participated in planting a maple seed, pumpkin seed, and mystery seed found on the playground into hollowed mini pumpkins. Over the next several days, we will see if they grow.

We also collected and measured the rain! The consensus was that we got a lot of rain. Monday the kids watched while I taped down a few different size containers on a tray, got on my handy umbrella hat, and we all took a ‘field trip’ to the doors; placing them outside to collect rain. On Thursday we brought them in and measured out seven cups of water!

Ms. Molly had her 3rd birthday on Thursday! Magically,  the fairy knew and left a gemstone for Molly in her garden. After a visit from the fairy, we all settled down for a snack and sang an off-tune rendition of happy birthday. Birthday dog came out as well and joined in the song.

It was a pleasure seeing and meeting all the families during back to school night Thursday. Thank you for making the time. We have a new boy starting in class next Monday
