Valentine’s Day is Coming

We have been talking this week about Valentine’s Day, with most of the conversation explaining that Valentine’s Day is a wonderful day to say “I love you” to their parents and family. And hearts are a way to say ‘I love you.’ The children have been busy making projects with hearts, coloring hearts, cutting hearts, and playing with toys that have hearts. The children enjoy reciting our heart poem which went home in their Orange Folders. The Valentine Bags with special cards will go home on Monday (Tuesday for the children who are not in school on Monday). They are excited to give their parents the special Valentine’s they have made at school. Some of the seasonal activities are pictured below:

The children always love to have a ‘treasure hunt’. Each child gets an item and the matching ones are spread around the room. The children have to walk around, find their match, and bring both pictures back to the rug. This week we used matching hearts, of course.

On Thursday and Friday, while the children were playing in the Big Room, I placed a heart on the purple dots that are used for spacing the children during Music and Movement classes. When they saw the hearts, they came running over to the area to take them. I explained to them that they may touch and feel the hearts, but no one may pick them up to collect them. They must remain on the floor. It was a wonder to watch them look at the different designs, handle them, turn them over, but always leave them on the floor, even as they were playing near them. It was an excellent exercise in self-control because the children really wanted to collect them. When they lined up to go back to our classroom, I called them one at a time to retrieve a heart and hand it to me. There were enough on the floor to go through the line 2 times. Everyone waited for their turn, something they would not have been able to do last fall. Your children are growing!

Last but not least, our Circle Time visitor this week was Valentine Bear. Note that he is covered with kisses. Now ask your child how to sing our Hello song to Valentine Bear.
