January

When we came back to school in January, I was afraid there would not be any snow to complement our Winter theme. Thankfully, that was not the case! We had a lot of fun exploring Winter themes both inside and outside the classroom. Here are some examples of the different styles of painting we did. On the left is a representational painting of a penguin. We put a blank penguin template on the easel, and each child painted one after looking at many pictures of penguins. On the right is an example of a more open-ended painting. We put blank paper on the easel with a few different colors. In this case, the child said she painted a snow storm.

Here we are celebrating the most recent snowfall and pretending to be an Arctic fox..

We read a book called “The Mitten Tree” by Candace Christiansen. It tells the story of a lonely old woman who knits mittens for children who do not have any. She places them on a tree in her yard where they can come and get them. After discussing themes of kindness and giving to others, we made our own mitten tree.

We will continue to discuss the theme of kindness and what it means to be a good friend as we head into Valentine’s Day. We are also looking forward to more playtime in the snow!
