Dinosaurs and baking

The children learned and explored all things dinosaur! The children also helped bake some delicious cookies. The children were ablate work on lots of skills throughout the baking process.

Art projects:

Dinosaur Stamp Art Collage - The children used various dinosaur shaped stamps to dip into paint and press onto the paper. The children said the name of the dinosaur the wanted to use.

Dinosaur paper bag puppet- The children painted the paper bag green using a paint brush. When the paint was dry, the children glued on the eyes, spikes, teeth and nose. We used our puppets during circle time to accompany our dinosaur songs and poems.

Collaborative dinosaur foot print art- The children completed another collaborative whole group art project. The concept was very similar, but this time they used dinosaurs instead of cars. The children dipped the dinosaur into the painted then had it “walk” or “stomp” all over the white paper that was laid down on the art table. The children enjoyed this very much and spent a lot of time engaging in this project.

Dinosaur rubbing plate stencil- A rubbing plate stencil is a plastic plate that has raised bumps that form a picture. These were dinosaurs. The teacher lays a paper on ton of the plate. The child then uses rock and flat rectangle crayons to press down and rub back and forth to unvail the picture.

In the sensory table, the children dug for dinosaur bones and skeletons in mood sand. They also discovered that they could make dinosaur “fossils” by pressing the side of the toy into the said to make an imprint. Some friends also noticed that the dinosaur skeletons made footprints in the sand similar to the footprints with the paint in the art project. We used one of our dinosaur books to identify some of the dinosaurs.

At one of the tables, children completed dinosaur puzzles and engaged in a dinosaur matching activity. They enjoyed learning the names of each dinosaur.

At another table, the children played with tiny dinosaurs and eggs. They practiced fine motor and problem solving skills trying to find out how to close the egg. It required the child to match the egg up just right to click it into place.

At the easel, the children used their fine motor skills to create dinosaur scenes with magnets and stamps. The children asked or identified the names of each dinosaur while using both the stamps and magnets.

On the rug and up on the loft, the children played with dinosaur toys. On the loft, there were various dinosaurs and a couple small mountains. On the rug there was a much bigger mountain which had slides for both cars and dinosaurs. In the children’s game, all of the mountains were volcanoes.

For cooking this week, we baked cookies and cream cookies. The children help pour and mix the ingredients. The children counted the amount of cups and tablespoons we added of each ingredient. They counted out 10 Oreo cookies that would added to our dough. They then helped crush the cookies using a potato masher. The crushed cookies were mixed into the dough. The children helped roll the dough into balls. They made the observation how the experience was similar to playing with play dough. The resulting cookie was basically a sugar cookie with crushed Oreos mixed into the dough. It was delicious and offered lots of great experiences for the children.

The children enjoyed some time outside in the beautiful weather! They explored the playground structures and built sandcastles in the sand box.
