Rainbows
The children love rainbows and it was St. Patrick’s day, so I thought it was a great week to have some rainbow fun!
For the art projects, we started with a hand print four leaf clover. The children described what the paint felt like on their hands. It was a wonderful sensory experience. Adding the gold glitter, was many of the children’s favorite part! Next, the children made pots of gold. They practiced their fine motor skills and built hand strength by tearing yellow paper for the gold. The children put a glue wash on the paper then pressed the teared paper pieces onto the paper. The children, then decorated the black paper cut out into a pot shape with some confetti. The final project was our rainbows. There was a rainbow pre-drawn on the paper. Each line was a color of the rainbow. The children used pom poms to make dots on the line with the corresponding color. They matched the color of the paint to the color of the line, then followed the arch. This works on hand coordination and fine motor skills. Cotton balls were added for the clouds.
The children did more color matching at the easel using a magnet set. The children matched the colored magnets into the corresponding colored paint can magnet.
At one of the tables, the children explored with wooden rainbow colored arch blocks. At the other table, the children dug for gold coins and collected them in buckets/pots. They counted the coins that were found. Some of the children discovered they could make sand castles with the buckets. They made a connection to making sand castles in the sand box.
On the rug, the children explored and played with monster trucks and wooden blocks. They built roads, buildings, bridges and more! Up on the loft, the children made fences and houses for the ponies using rainbow colored magnet tiles. The children made the connection that the semi-circle blocks look like rainbows. We talked about how they are the same shape.
For our cooking day, we prepared a fun snack. The children frosted a graham cracker, then placed colored cereal on top in an arch. They added marshmallows for the clouds. This was our rainbow themed snack!
