Self Portraits
I try to do several throughout the year; it is fun to see the evolution from start to the end.
They are given a mirror, a template face, and colored markers. In order to translate the image in the mirror to the page they are several basic things they need to identify. What is my eye color? What is my hair color? What marker matches?
In conjunction to identifying colors, they are also working on spatial relationships; ‘Where are my eyes on my face?’ ‘Where are my lips in relationship to my eyes or nose?’
Raking Leaves
The kids practiced tearing paper into small bits. Tearing is a great skill to practice. It requires holding a piece of paper in one hand while the other pinches and turns the wrist to tear down.
They also worked on cutting to make the bottom of the rake. Once they ripped and cut, the kids glued down all the pieces.
Wind Socket
The kids used leaf shaped stamps and stamped leaves all over a brown piece of paper. Once that had dried, the kids were asked to squeeze out a ‘chocolate chip’ size dot of glue and add streamers. They used a hole punch to make two holes at the top. The teachers taped it together and added a handle.
For Free art, the kids painted with yellow and then red paint at the easel. Once they had yellow and red down, they use a fresh brush to mix the two colors together seeing the colors mix to make orange!
