Gerald & Piggie & Pigeon & Duckling

Author Mo Willems has written a couple of book series which are universally loved by children. One series is about the adventures of Gerald (an elephant) and Piggie; the other is about Pigeon and Duckling. The illustrations are of a similar nature so one may think that these are all one series. This week we read more books than usual as we tried to read as many of the available books as possible.

With the arrival of spring, another annual occurrence happened in the Orange Classroom. The arrival of ants! If any crumb of food is left on the floor, a little collection of ants will appear. We try to stay vigilant with the sweeping and washing. Some children take it in stride, but some children become upset when they see an ant. On one of the days, Mrs. Dotivala found a way to make the ants exciting instead of scary. She put a couple of ants in a little dish and gave all the children magnifying glasses. Now it became a fun activity to watch the ants. I never saw any ants on Friday, so I think all of our efforts have paid off.

On Friday the children sprayed water onto paper to make the color in tissue paper ‘bleed’ onto white paper. The little 3 oz. spray bottle in the photo is the perfect size for their hands. It made the small muscles in their hands work hard, always a great pre-writing activity.

Were you wondering which of the Mo Willems characters visited Circle Time this week? We had Pigeon and Duckling for a fun time in our classroom.
