Pete the Cat

Our class had a fun week with Pete the Cat. Even though most of the children are familiar with Pete, they never tire of him. We were lucky to have Pete as our Circle Time visitor this week. Our book bucket was filled with a large selection of Pete books, but we only read a few of them during Story Time because the children requested Pete the Cat: I Love My School Shoes so many times. During quiet reading the children looked through the collection of the books. Our tables were full of many Pete or other cat activities.

It’s impossible to know which items will be very popular with the children. You may think it may be an expensive, fancy toy. This week I took a tall can and covered it with yellow paper. I attached 4 paper buttons and made a slit in the lid. It was put on a tray with many ‘play’ buttons. This proved to be so popular that often one of the teachers had to sit at the table to ensure that everyone got a turn and any battles could be squashed over who got to put the buttons in the slit. The simplest of a homemade toy was the most popular

Some of our Pete the Cat projects are on our bulletin board. You can see other projects below.

We had a special snack on Thursday. The children spread yellow frosting on a graham cracker and put 4 buttons (Skittles) on top. I’m sure you can imagine the frosting covered mouths and hands we had to clean.

The children enjoyed a special book I created to go along with Pete the Cat. Everyone’s shoes were in book with a lift-the-flap over the name. Here is a sample page. When I took the photos I had to be very careful to keep track of the order of the photos and note the name of the child. And when I got the prints, I had to decipher my notes to get them identified correctly. Imagine my surprise when I read the book to the children and some of them called out the names correctly as soon as I turned the page. You just never know what information their little minds are storing up. Can you guess who these shoes belong to? Below you can see all of the pictures from the book. Are you able to find your child’s shoes?
