Boxitects

As part of our construction unit, we read a book called Boxitects, by Kim Smith, about a girl who builds extraordinary things out of ordinary cardboard boxes. Using the book as inspiration, I decided to go to our supply closet to get a variety of cardboard materials for our own construction project. We talked about how architects use blueprints to plan their construction projects, and some of the children wanted to try making their own.

Using cardboard boxes, tubes, masking tape and string, the children made some amazing creations: a drawbridge, train, castle, house and a window to name a few.

The class worked diligently for over an hour planning, measuring, cutting, and building.  At times they had to stop and reassess their projects and make necessary adjustments.  I heard STEM conversations about building a more stable base and making sure to measure correctly so that the piece is wide enough to fit in a certain space.  The class had such a fun time with this engaging activity.  The hardest part was convincing them to let me keep their creations at school for the Art Show!
