S is for Snake
We had a short but busy week in the Yellow Class. This week we started our alphabet books. Each week we focus on a different letter of the alphabet learning its name, the sound it makes, and how to write it. We do many activities all week long to reinforce this knowledge. We also have the children make a page for their alphabet book, and at the end of the year, they get to bring it home. The children are always so proud of this, and it is such a treasured keepsake from their time in Pre-K. This week we began with the letter S. They did an outstanding job cutting out the letter, which is very tricky given all of the curves. When they finished, they glued it down and transformed it into a snake by adding eyes, dots, and a tongue.
In Pre-K, we do many different types of art projects. The “letter page” (as we refer to it) is an example of a project that is representational, meaning that the children are given an example and expected to replicate it to the best of their ability. In addition to reinforcing letter and sound recognition, the children are also developing fine motor skills (cutting, gluing) as well as learning how to follow a set of instructions. It is actually very complex! The hardest part is waiting until the end of the year to bring the book home.
We talked about Sea Life this week. We read books about sea creatures, made sea animals out of playdoh, and created sea felt scenes at the easel. On Thursday we charted which sea animal was our favorite. Not surprisingly, it was the shark!
Mrs. Kind brought in a game that the children enjoyed exploring.
Rainy days mean extra time in the Big Room.
As we close out September, we are looking forward to a fun October with all that Autumn has to offer: apples, leaves, squirrels, and pumpkins to name a few!
